slap bass videos?

As I am teaching myself how to play it's difficult to learn certain aspects, and as far as slapping goes, I didn't even know it was possible on an upright until I heard some people talking about it and heard it in a recording or too. I assume it's completely different from slapping and popping on an electric, which I can do. Does anyone know where I can find an online video that has someone playing slap bass? I'd prefer it to be free to watch, but if theres no other alternative then I might have to do that. Thanks in advance.

Scott Hinds has a great site where you can download some free clips of him slapping (he is really good!). Just watch them over and over, and try to do it.

I highly reccomend the Mark Rubin/Kevin Smith video "slapping:the ungentle art".

More important than this though is how your bass is set up. slapping on full tension spiros is an uphill battle. You want your action higher than a jazzer's to be able to get your fingers under the strings, but not so high that you really have to beat it to get a click.

A lot of slap players play gut strings, but they are expensive. If your really fond of the steel sound, the best thing to do is get a solo set, and tune them down. Since you are just testing the waters, so to speak, I would get a set of Barefoot Larry's HBSS:

For $20, they sound similar to guts, and are way easy to slap. You could mix & match strings, too. Some folks (me included) will have a gut, or HBSS D&G, and a steel E&A.The name of the slapping game is low tension.

Go to www.rockabillybass.com and look around, a lot to learn from those guys. check out the message board : http://rockabillybass.com/phpBB/index.php
Ask a few questions; they love to help.

Art of the Bass

Hey man,

Also check out Ray Brown's videos called "The Art of the Bass." One of the videos features Milt Hinton playing and describing his slap bass technique. You can't download it for free that I know of but I'm pretty sure they're still available.

I've slapped my bass silly using Spirocores, D'Addario Hybrids and Velvets with no problem. As mpoppitt said, you're action can't be too low but it doesn't need to be unreasonably high, either. If you change to gut strings you're probably not gonna like how they bow. I'd leave the spiros on if I were you. I'm primarily a jazz player, and slapping the steels is not a big problem for me.

BTW, if you don't know of Milt Hinton, check him out! He's a true master of slap bass, and one of the fathers of this style.

Speaking of Ray Brown's "The Art of Playing the Bass", does anyone know where I can get a copy? I was looking a few months ago and could only see it on video (through Lemur music and the like), but looked again today and can't find it for sale (online) anywhere!

I want to slap like Pops Foster and Wellman Braud! (I play all that kind of stuff, hot 20s big band music there's nothing like it!)

YOU CAN OBTAIN A COPY OF THESE VIDEOS-- INCLUDING THE MILT HINTON SLAP SESSION-- FROM THE ISB.

(AND IF YOU DUG POPS FOSTER AND WELLMAN BRAUD, YOU'D HAVE DUG CHESTER ZARDIS-- MAYBE THE GREATEST NEW ORLEANS SLAP BASSIST EVER.)
