Urb Slap Technique

I was listening to some jazz/swing music yesterday, and it sounded like the bass player was slapping the bass at times.I have heard that the technique was originally done on upright.
I am an electric player only, so excuse my ignorance, but how exactly do you slap on an upright?I can see pulling up and letting the string hit the fingerboard, but a downward slap on an upright doesn't sound like it would project well. Thanks for the insight on this.

The downward slap carries pretty well, although I'm not sure how it differs from electric. I've never tried to downslap and electric.

When you downslap on the upright you hit it with your palm.

Is that what you were refering to or am I in my ignorance overlooking a different thing that would be classified as downslapping? I really don't know!
