my 2 cents: Keep it simple, keep it grooving. Don't over play or try to distract from the soloists - - your job is to stay with the drummer and keep the ground solid for the ego guys. Sure, you'll find yourself repeating phrases... but imagine this were a rock and roll tune, where's it's usually ALL about repetition - and then be happy you're playing jazz!

I have been listening to hank jone's playing a lot over the last six months. The record "somethin else" would be good to transcribe.
He has a very sophisticated mastery of playing simple linear lines that have lots of direction.

Two tips to help your line sound right:
1) Use chromaticism sparingly. Rufus Reid's book has him playing many examples over one or two chord vamps and never really repeating himself.
2) Play in 1/2 and first position as much as possible.

great advice guys, thanks! one thing i've been trying is treating each inversion (going up the neck) like my next target. i've been enjoying that - any thoughts?
