Is there a book that teaches in 1-2-3-4 ?
Also another question that this brought up to me is, why do some basses have say 42 or 43 inch string length?
As far as I know this would just widen the intonation and give the strings a higher tension.
Help anyone? |
- It is hard to give advice without knowing more background. You have no info in your profile. What you are saying is a really a common mis-conception amoung beginners.
There are a ton of factors to consider such as genre, set up, hand size, etc. Dalla Torre, Tom Gale and many others work with 4 fingers in a classical solo setting with good results but I have SERIOUS doubts about it working in the low positions for a strong pizzicato sound.
Also, you may be able to make the stretch in your living room, but will your hand hold up for a whole gig doing it?
Either way, I'd learn a standard method first then work on extended fingering systems.
It is tough to get by using one method or fingering system anymore and these methods don't really take that long to digest anyway.
Simandl is the standard method for a reason: it works. It is far from perfect but it is hard to understand the improvments the newer methods have made without knowing the earlier ones. ignorannce is never a good idea, ignoring the old or the new can be equally problematic.
