Placed an order for some D'addario extra light gauge strings and it only took just under a week to get here, which is brilliant as I live on a tiny island near the UK! Excellent service and wonderfull guy, I would definitely recommend using his services

I have a 32" scale bass, from ball end to E peg is 35.5" ball end to G is 41".
Can I use long scale strings or do I need to get medium scale?

Well, most "Long Scale" strings are 36.5" from ball end to the silk. What are the tuning pegs like on this instrument? Are they large diameter like on a Jazz bass or P-Bass? If so, you may be able to use some Long Scale strings that are flexible enough:

The other option is getting a Medium Scale E string (34" Ball to Silk) and long scale A D G strings.

It is ok for the E string to be like this one as long as the string is flexible enough"

Let me know the type of strings you are interested in and I can give you your best options...

This is my Jazz bass with Long Plus GHS Boomers (38" Ball to Silk). Since they are flexible enough they are acceptable to be like this...

The bass is a Warmoth Jazz the pegs are J/P size.
I have an old set of DR black beauties, XL Pro Steels (med) & R cocco Nickels (light). Thought I better check before cutting these shorter.

I have no experience with the R Cocco,

The Pro-Steels I know you wont have a problem with...

The Black Beauties were they used before? It will all depend on how they are cut, and since they are more tightly wound they are not really as flexible going around tuning posts, so those I would be cautious with.

Hi Jason,

I recently got a set of Chromes (40-100) from you, and they feel brilliant. They have just the right amount of tension that I can set my action really low with no fretbuzz, but they don't feel like an effort to play. This cleans up my playing hugely.

Do you know any roundwound strings that have an equivalent amount of tension? Preferably nickels. I've never been able to achieve a setup as comfortable as this with rounds but I would like to.

Thanks, I know you dispense enough free advice as it is.

Well, there is an average of 41lbs tension on that set. It looks like 37, 45, 43, 38.

To get closest to that you need something between a 45-105 and 45-100. Like a 44-102 set.

But keep in mind round wounds are going to feel very different since they are more flexible than the flatwound construction.

Jason has the tension charts posted for D'Addarios. With nickel XLs you could make a very balanced ~40 lb/string set with 45-60-80-105 singles.

The tension / flexibility on the Pressure Wounds is on the lighter end of the Half Rounds. You can get gauges a little lighter in the pressure wounds that will feel lighter than the half rounds and still be very playable and nice to the touch.

I would go with the Light GHS Gauge:
GHS Pressurewound Flats Bass Strings - 4 String Set
I got the GHS Pressurewounds from you a few weeks ago. ML gauge...you were correct! Great feel

Hey Jason, just registered on your site. I'm looking for new strings for an SX 6-string, and I was thinking of going with some flats or semi-flats. Any particular set that would have plenty of tension on the B string, or would most sets work well?

I've done a couple of purchases with Jason here lately. Top notch, my one and only place to buy strings now.

FINALLY getting around to switching my basses back to DR Black Beauties. Just put the order in---process was very quick and painless, with no unnecessary hassles (which goes a LONG way with me).

The semi-flats I got for my 6-string are amazing, and Jason's service was impeccable! I've had international orders that didn't come as well packed as these strings did!
