bass stand

I was curious about everyone's opinions on stands. Do you all use stands? I've heard the best stand is the corner of the room.

Please go to the search function for this forum and choose "Advanced Search." Enter the term "stand" without quotes and select "Search Titles Only" from the dropdown. The result will be a list of threads that answer, in great detail, the question you asked. We often go around and around here on the same topics and it's helpful to use the search function first.

My bass is leaned into a corner, where it always stays. My bass stand is in the closet, where it always stays. I bought a stand when I didn't know better ...

I use a Koenig & Meyer stand whenever I leave the house or my shop with a doublebass. The bass never lies naked on the floor without its cover. When the cover is off my bass it is either in my hands or on the stand. My edges will never wear out

Yes, the best stand is the corner of a room. Otherwise lay it on the G string side of the bass. I do either of the two depending on where I am.

Shops use stands that are essentially big racks where they can sit sideways standing up supported on both lower bout ribs and sometimes in a neck cradle, but those are not usually practical for home use unless you have a whole mess of basses.

I have seen some larger wood stands for home use similar to cello cradles that seem rather cumbersome but could work. I have also seen some home brew wood stands that have some structure to them that could work very well but they are rare to find or often home made.

A guitar type stand made for bass sucks. Avoid.

Mine spends about 1/4 its time on the meisel stand it came with (seen below). The rest of the time it is either in its bag, or on its side on a rug in my art room.

Wall corners are the best. The bass is out of the way and takes up little space there. For the old Italian bass, I have some 6"x1"x1/2" padding on a stick and wrapped in vinyl that I used some wire nails to nail into the wall. The only problem is that my basses are in different rooms because I don't have that many available corners in one single room. Bass on stands take up more floor space and they are harder to just grab and play.
It's nice to just walk up to a bass, turn it around, play it for a few minutes, turn it back, then lean it in the corner when I'm just standing around waiting for stuff, such as for the wife to settle on an outfit to go out in.

Thanks guys. Is it bad to leave your end pin out all the time? I'm always nervous to do it. I assume it could colapse.

Best Stand

I own a metal stand like pictured but it stays in the basement, I got that bass stool/stand from KC Strings for Xmas but I have to lower the endpin to use it.
So it stays in the corner with a towel between the shoulders and the walls.

I use an Ingles stand. I don't trust leaning my bass in the corner because I have cats who can be rowdy sometimes. Also, my bass looks beautiful on the stand. The Ingles stand is not quite as burly as I wish it were, but it has not failed me yet. Also, I leave my endpin out, so it takes me 10 seconds to walk past and have the bass up and in playing position.

I have one of those also. I use it only at gigs, I hate lying it on its side on the floor and there's often not a good corner to lean it into (which is what I do at home).

I have a Meisel stand, and an Ingles Stand. I like the Ingles better because the height of the cradle can be adjusted higher so I can leave my endpin extended. The Meisel doesn't allow for much low clearance (at least the one I have doesn't).

I have yet to see any stand as sturdy as a bass propped in a corner. The cat/dog/baby thing is far more dangerous with stands than in a corner IMO.

Our section lays them on the floor at the Orchestra hall too, but it's nice to have a stand at home. I keep it on the stand tuned and ready to go; less unpacking time = more practice time.

Any opinions on keeping the bass in the corner, but always leaving the end pin out? It seems a bit dangerous and i worry the end pin may colapse causing the bass to fall. although it would be great to just grab it from the corner and go.

Lean it forward against the shoulders, doesn't matter where the end pin is, if you prop it like a tripod it really can't go anywhere.
