The Best Upright Bass Case

I'm Thinking of getting a new Upright Bass Case. I want one with much cusion and insulation, but I still want it loose enough to be able to get the case on by myself. What material do you suggest I have in the case?

Are you talking about a bass BAG, or a bass TRUNK? If you're talking about a bass BAG, I highly recommend the in-house Lemur brand bag. It goes for about $140, has great padding, sturdy material, a neck-cinch, and 5 handles. I already own one, and will be buying another one for my (backup) plywood bass soon.

If you are talking about a trunk, I have no idea.

Bass trunks are heavy and awkward, and start at around $1k5 - but when you think that the instrument inside may be worth $15k+, it's cheap insurance. Bags are cheaper (~$100-150) and are easier to handle. Don't EVER check your bass in as baggage if you're travelling by air, and it's not in a trunk. I recently saw the remains of a fine bass which had had it's neck broken clean off after this had happened - very sad, and the airline refused to pay-up as (they said) the bass had been "inadequately packed", despite the fact that the owner was told that he couldn't hand-carry it in its bag, and it would have to be checked-in as baggage - the baggage-trolls must have had a field-day with that one...

Thanks Guys, I was planning on getting a bag, not a trunk. I don't think I'll be taking my bass to the airport any time soon, so I'm not worried about that.

I love my Mooradian case. You can even order them custom sized in three fashion colours!!!

Mooradian is very good for protection without weight. And they know EXACTLY where to put the handles.

Mooradians are nice, but I'm too cheap to spend that much on a soft case, and it is a bit too bulky for my tastes. I found one the Kaces III bag and like it a lot.

As others have said it has the handles in the right places, is heavly padded and fits my bass very well.

Also testifying to the padded goodness of the Kaces III bag from (AH) Bob. For a low-priced (under $175) bag, it's well-padded, has lots of pockets, and manages to scrunch up small enough to fit above my closet @ home when it's not in use.

I have a Bobelock bag which has inch-thick padding, lots of straps and pockets and is roomy enough for any 3/4 size bass. Its been great even though it is well travelled. I have had it through two Northern Ontario winters (Kay bass.... its OK) where the nylon covering was so brittle because of the cold it was like paper but it has never torn or come apart. The positioning of the handles make it easy to carry and to load into vehicles.
I got mine from Chris Quinn for around 200 bucks US but I'm not sure how much they are now.

This is my first post in this forum. I have posted in a cuppla other forums. Wow, there looks to be a bucketload of info here.
I use an iCover Bass Bag. Made from HD canvas, high density foam panels, plenty of handy handles, nifty shoulder strap so you gotta spare hand to carry your amp, big pockets and easy to get on and off even in tight situations. Cost under $400AUD (~$200US)
I reckon the most important feature to look for, apart from strength and durability, is the ability to be able to carry the instrument around with one arm, so you have a spare hand to carry your amp, open doors, wave at fans and all that.

I really like my bag by samuel eastman company. It is well padded and has proven itself to be very durbale, and it is very affordable.

For some reason I find a lot if the bags out there extremely awkward with little sense for handle placement or zipper design etc. Mooradians are good but I'm not sure I'd get a heavy duty one again. Weight is really so important for a bag and padding can be over stressed... It helps but it only does so much. I'd like a bag with these considerations. Now that I think of it I think my mooradian is a little too puffy.

Since this is a popularity contest let me vote for Dave Messina. His bag offers great protection and fits my bass like a wet-suit. Handles in the right places and nice pockets.

I picked up a standard bag from Upton (they're local to me). Relatively inexpensive. Pretty well made, holding up nicely after a year of gigs. Nice bag ... but could use at least one more handle at the bottom.
