Since it's a natural finish, are you sure you want to paint it? Just asking...
Either way, I would say sanding it would be your best bet. I would start with a medium course sand paper, and work up to something like 1000 grit. There are others on here that can offer better advice about how to sand it.

I've had this bass for about 8 months and I still can't bear to tear off the plastic control layout guideline.

It's strung with Elixirs, and sounds great with the tone control backed off fully. In fact, that's the only way I play it. With the tone off. | Just an FYI you can take the knobs off the bass and take the plastic control layout off without ripping it off. |
