3 standards?

Hi,

I have an audition coming up soon that requires me to prepare 3 standards out of the real book - one latin, one ballad, one swing - I'm looking for some suggestions. Any ideas? I've played jazz for a few years now, but I want to pick some songs that will really wow them. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Song choice won't wow them. In fact, there's nothing you can do to impress them. They have deep experience. They know "wow."

But you can satisfy them. Pick three songs you really love, make sure you know them inside and out, and express your joy and love through the bass. That will reflect your growth as a musician in the best light.

Even though I have no idea what you're auditioning for or who will be watching, good luck, play well and have fun. That's really where it's at, right?

I am with Sam, Playing the Sh** out of some basic tunes is better than Hacking through a Shorter, Mingus or Monk tune, unless you happen to know one of them inside and out...

Of the categories you mentioned, what tunes do you already know?

I know quite a few tunes in each of those styles, and I love all of them. I guess I'll just have to sit down and give a listen through my jazz collection to make the decision. I appreciate the help guys, I hadn't thought of it that way. So to work I go, and I let you all know if I got it next week.

As Sam says, play the music and don't take an EGO trip!
