Angola by Wayne Shorter

Here's my rough lead sheet. I'm wondering about the chords. Highly doubt they were all simple 7 chords , but damned if I can pick out the exact voicings.

Any thoughts?

Based on some of the solos I've picked thru, I don't think they're b5 chords. Not that it matters that much (a good player will tear it up, regardless). But I am curious.

When bass players notate chords... tonight on Fox at 8, 7 central.

The Soothsayer is one of my all time favorite records! Nobody ever seems to talk about it though...

I think what you have is pretty close, but it sounds like the Eb7 at the end of each A section is really an A7alt or an Eb7#11 depending on which bass note Ron hits. The bridge section sounds like G7 - Ab7 | Db7 - Bb7 | F7 | Bb7 - A7alt but sometimes Ron hits an E instead of a Bb on the 2nd Bb7 chord.

By the time it gets to Freddy's solo I think they abandoned the head changes and started playing D7 | Eb7#11 (or A7alt) for the A sections. And I think the changes you have for the bridge might be correct for the solos.

Hey, thanks for the response! I'll try those out, see if they make sense. We just ran it tonight, sax bass and drums and it was a blast.

I tried some #9s here and there and they didn't seem to fit at all - ditto b9. Could definitely see a #11 in there somewhere, though.

If I get something a lot better, I'll post the amended sheet.
