Bass and Viola

Hi, Me and my friend are doing a Bass and viola duet for Solo and Ensemble in High School. We are wanting to find something challenging. Maybe something dark and mysterious(doesn't have to be but that's what we would want to most likely do.) Can someone help us.

Michael Kibbe has an interesting "Duo Sonata". Go to Michaelkibbe.com to buy it. It's opus 86 on his price listing.

John Patitucci's "Theme and Variations For 6-string Bass and Strings" is one heck of a beautiful peace

Have you tried "Spirituals"? You would have to transpose the bass/tenor clef to viola. I did it with bassoon and it works fine. Go to ASODB.com, hit downloads and hit Spirituals- Free!!! Bassists love that...

Check out Liben's selection of stuff, they have some good looking stuff for double and viola or violin and also a section for specifically viola and bass. I have been considering buying some of the stuff myself for a violinist and I, tell me if you find anything good.

There isn't much I've heard that was written by Frank Proto that I didn't immediately like, and he seems to do dark and mysterious pretty well to my ears too.

That's a good suggestion.

I think there are some good arrangements, which are all arranged by proto. I'm not sure if he has any in this specific category or not, but he is a great composer. I'm currently playing his Carmen Fantasy, it's amazing.

Yep. Myself, I've been working on and off with his 1963 sonata. I've got a recording of him playing it that I listen to sometimes too. He's a pretty darn good player too.
