chamber music

I’m working on a research project for school and am looking for chamber music rep which includes the double bass. I’m mainly interested in works composed within the last 100 (maybe 150 years) with parts specifically composed for the bass, no transcriptions.

I already performed the “Trout,” Dvorak Quintet, a couple Rossini sonatas, “Histoire du soldat” and I’m running out of ideas.

Also, later this season I’m booked to perform the Schulhoff, Hindemith Quintet, Shostakovich Chamber Symphony (one to a part), and an Omar Daniel Quintet.

Again, as part of the project, the music needs to be from the last 100 years (or so), and specifically written for the bass.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The British Composer Mark-Anthony Turnage wrote a piece for Dave Holland as featured soloist on Double Bass with chamber ensemble - but that may be a bit 'unconventional' - but very recent!

There is a lot of literature, but I can't vouch for purchase availability for all of it. If you have access to a university database subscription, search Worldcat.

Saint-Seans wrote a septet that is a trumpet feature but is scored with a double bass.

While not from the last 150 years, there's Mozart's "Gran Partita" for winds and string bass.

Does John Adams' "Chamber Symphony" count, or is that too large of an ensemble?

Good suggestions. Thanks a lot for the help.
I’m looking mainly for small ensembles, preferably 5 or less.

Franz Berwald wrote a Septet. The score is available for free on the internet. I'm generating parts with Finale and we're playing it this summer.

Hummel wrote a bunch of Septets. I bought these from Shattinger Music in St. Louis.

Mozart's Grand Partita includes bass.

how famous do you have to be?

Read your post, I am a composer and bassist. I have the following:
The Sojourner (chamber opera scored for vln,cb,fl,ob,tpt & pno)
Howard's Pyrograph,a new work to be premiered in August for string quintet and piano
Anyone Lived in a Pretty How Town (cummings) for soprano, string quintet and piano
Lament for cb and piano.

Something in another thread made me think of Astor Piazzola - who has written a lot of music for small groups - like quintet and his music nearly always has Double Bass in it!

In fact here's a link to sheet music of a Bass Piano score :

You don’t necessarily need to be famous. But, works that are performed with some regularity would help narrow things down.

Thanks a lot to everyone for their suggestions and help!

Found this on Jason Heath's bass blog the other day, actually. I think you'll enjoy it.

That's an incredibly helpful link. I'm organizing some free concerts right now with a string quintet and was having trouble finding reportoire. I'm going to bring that list with me as a starting point when I go to the school's music library to dig for some gems amidst the crap that mess contains.
