I find that to my ear, improvizing in Dorian mode clashes with it a bit. Better natural minor or harmonic minor and I play a 9th doublestop for those hits (open D and E up an octive).
That's just me, though, you may hear something else. The only thing difficult about that tune is the form length. Listening and internalizing solves that for me.
I don't give playing advice much, because I don't feel qualified and maybe I shouldn't ever, but I've gone fairly deep on that tune.

Its not on there? Damn. I think I have a PDF somewhere. If I can find it I will pm it, though by then you will likely have a copy. |

Listen to it a few times and just try to write out the form length and structure (a, a, ...) Then, how many measures is each section? When and where does that riff recur?
Then go back and start assigning chords to those measures. I'll give you a hint, it starts with D minor and doesn't change a lot. The changes that are there aren't the subtle to me, they jump out pretty clearly.
It's hard to do sometimes, but perhaps less hard on this song than others and if you're drawn to this song, maybe it would be a good exercise for you.
Just a thought.

I learned the song way back when from a Miles Davis CD and still enjoy playing the song. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
