Duo w/acoustic guitar

I'm trying to get a duo project going with a classically-trained guitarist. What are some examples of acoustic jazz guitar playing I can show him? I like the sound of Charlie Byrd and Laurindo Almeida/Ray Brown duos, but I'm trying to find an example of something less Latin and more early jazz or gypsy jazz.

Django? You may also want to check out Jim Hall with Red Mitchell.

I did a duo like this a couple months back with my friend, and man do you ever have to be solid with your walking. Time and harmonic structure are completely on your back. Its fun though, it has really nice interconnected vibe.

Check out Jim Hall and Ron Carter, and Ed Bickert and Don Thompson.

If he's playing classical guitar, he should check out Gene Bertoncini. Just superb guitar playing.

Joe Pass did a couple of albums on classical guitar as well.

Also, in a more modern vein, there is the remarkable guitarist and composer Ralph Towner.

And one of my favorites; Romero Lubambo. He does play in a rather latin realm, but he's also done stuff with straight ahead players, including some great work with Tom Harrell.

. . . who recorded for years as a duo with the peerless bassist Michael Moore. Here is one example. On the one hand, no-one is going to mistake this for a John McLaughlin & Jonas Hellborg duo. On the other hand, for what it is it can't be beat.

On the subject of guitar-bass duets generally (i.e. irrespective of nylon/flat-top/electric), do check and enjoy Mr. Paul Warburton's duet album with Dale Bruning, Our Delight.

there's also NHOP and Joe Pass, though that's kind of a crazy vibe.

I really like the duet recordings that David Friesen did with Uwe Kropinski. Not really old time or gypsy... but extremely beautiful music. I work a lot in a duet with a nylon string player and I've found these recordings a great source of inspiration.
Cheers,
John

Ralph Towner & Gary Peacock. Two albums, on ECM. I hope there's another one in the future.

Beyond what's already mentioned... Django needs to be in there somewhere - even if he's not playing in a duo setting.
