Dvorak Op 77

Hi,
Has anyone tried the Dvorak Quintet (2 vn, va, cl and db)? If so, how difficult would be bass part be? Does it stay in the bass clef?
Any other info, if anyone's played it?

Thanks!
Jason

Hi,

I performed this quintet at a chamber music concert last October... this piece is challenging. The bass part itself isn't anything outrageous; Dvorak tends to write playable, idiomatic bass parts (the International Edition's bass part is mostly - if not completely - written in bass clef). Putting the piece together with the other four players takes some work, especially if you are dealing with less experienced chamber musicians. The 1st violin part has a few hairy spots, and - a word to the wise - be sure you have a good violist!

While a nice piece, it is a bit long-winded. To the chagrin of Sonata Form purists, you might consider leaving out the repeats in the first movement.

Dave.
