| Hi Kirsten, there are recordings of the three gamba sonatas by Gary Karr and Harmon Lewis which I have not heard, but think would be better off avoiding if you're looking for interpretations that will help you learn the pieces or give you new ideas. To my knowledge, these are the only recordings of the sonatas on bass. I have a handful of recordings of the gamba sonatas on gamba and cello and my personal favorite is with Jordi Savall and Ton Koopman. On the gamba and harpsichord, I also like Laurence Dreyfus and Ketil Haugsand, Wieland Kuijken and Gustav Leonhardt, and Jaap ter Linden and Henk Bouman. There are interesting versions of these pieces by Anner Bylsma and Bob van Asperen who perform them on a piccolo cello and trunk organ. I don't know why they do this, I think the combination sounds awful, but I'm sure Bylsma has his reasons. If you want any of these, I can send them to you over AIM or something. |
