I did a database search and found it. It's not clear that it was ever published commercially but copies exist in libraries. I have sent for a copy through my university's inter-library loan program. I'll let you know if I get it.

Hi Gael,

I've never heard of this piece (or the composer!) Can you tell me about it--and how you heard it--or heard about it?

I'm always looking for violin + bass pieces . . .you would think there would be more out there.

thanks,
Jeremy

I know very little. Lourié was a Russian composer who emigrated to the States. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Lourié

Violinist Guidon Kremer recorded some of his music. Lourié wrote a sonata for violin and DB in 1924.
Cf. http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Lourié

Someone told me about this sonata, and also recommended a piece by Tuur, and Isang Yung's "Together", which is a very good piece. I wish there were more music for violin and bass, do you know anything ?

There is an early work by Elliot Schwartz, a sonata for violin and bass. Go to his website and contact him, he may be able to get a copy to you.

Duo Concertant by Niels Viggo Bentzon
http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/store/...s+Item-_-Title

Romantic Suite by Findeisen. Out of print, but scans may be available somewhere, if you know what I mean. Requires solo tuning.

Frank Proto has a duet. Probably Liben Music

Serge Lancen - concerto (Billaudot)

William Sydeman -Duo (Seesaw Music)

Fritz Leitermeyer - 12 Dialogues (Doblinger)

There is a recording of the Bentzon. I found out how to get a copy from Germany and was about to. PM me an email and I'll send you the info. Basically you have to send cash to a very small record company in Germany.

"Together" by Isang Yun is an excellent piece. Recorded by Dan Styffe: http://www.amazon.com/Double-Bass-Oy...2351346&sr=1-1

There is also the Duettini Concertanti by Virgilio Mortari, which I found is less interesting. For that one you need solo-tuning.

Frank Proto has two duos. (Liben Music)

Teppo Hauta-aho has two duos too: "Duettino Fantasy" (very good) and "Almost a serious duo" (I think this last one requires solo-tuning).

Hey gang. I finally have a scan of the Lourie sonata for vln and double bass. Very interesting piece, very much influenced by Stravinsky, from 1924. The original was a hand copy in very large (11x14) format so I copied and scanned it to letter size. It should print just fine. I cannot find any evidence of a copyright. I looked at the LOC website and found nothing listed for it, and any mention of a library copy says "photocopy of manuscript" or "ink copy". I don't think it was ever published, and I'm assuming it's public domain until otherwise informed. This is a scan of the ink copy. PM me with your email and I'll send it. Have fun.
Neil
