Music Drama (Wagner's own description); strictly speaking, to be an opera, the piece needs to have a chorus, and anyone familiar with The Ring Cycle will tell you that the only opera in that work is
Götterdämmerung, and the first time the chorus sings is at the start of Act II, Scene 3 where Hagen summons The Vassals in a rousing chorus; so by this time, the audience will have sat through about 12 hours of Wagner where the only music has been solo voices and orchestra,
