Nighthawks - Jazz marketed as Rock?

I just started playing bass again after 15 years. The best bass playing I ever heard was Jim Hughart on all those '70s Tom Waites albums. Now THATS the kind of bass I want to try and play. But what kind of music is that? Jazz? Rock?

I know Waites is kind of a one off. But the kind of music that comes on whenever a film noir Philip Marlow character comes on the TV. I've never heard anyone else play like that. Can anyone help me out and recommend people to listen to in a similar style? Thanks for any pointers.

Yeah, that's a "leviticusly deuteronomous" sound alright.

Take Waits out of the picture and you've got a straight-ahead mainstream jazz combo -- Mike Melvoin, Pete Chrislieb, Hughart and Bill Goodwin.

I think Steve Gilmore sounds a lot like Melvoin. Scope the Phil Woods sides with Gilmore and Goodwin.

I bet Hughart would say that Ray Brown was a major influence on his playing. You can't go too far wrong with Ray.

Have fun . . .

I have really enjoyed the bass playing on the Tom's last few albums. I dont know the guy's name, but the "baby bass" on "Alice" blows me away. I cant get enough of Tom Waits' stuff.
