Simandl Etudes With CDs?

I recently came across a pretty interesting (for me anyway) find. It's Simandl's 30 etudes but with 4 CDs that have full piano accompaniment. I tried to see if this has been brought up here before, but it looks pretty darn cool. I tried the little demo they had and I like it alot. I think this kind of thing will help me keep up interest while practicing. Has anyone else used this before?

My teacher had me using that CD in lessons while I was in my undergrad. He never made me buy the CD though. He would assign one of the Etudes and practice in unaccompanied during the week then have my play along with it in the lesson to see check on intonation and time (some of the accompaniments have weird rhythmic patterns for the piano and if you're internal tempo isn't dead on, it's easy to get way off of the piano recording). I would definitely recommend these play-a-longs.

Fascinating. Are the piano parts by Simandl? Is there additional material in the book absent from the standard edition? There's mention on the link of bowing discussion, etc....?

I don't know if Franz Simandl wrote the piano parts himself, but they were originally included when he published the etudes. The Music Minus One material does not contain anything new, just the 30 etudes with the CD's which feature Andrew Kohn playing the double bass along with just the piano accompaniment for practice.

You can actually download the original piano parts for free at Andrew Kohn's website.

I own this book and it is fantastic!

I only wish they had something similar for book 2 of Simandl......something where you could hear those exercises played perfectly, while at home..

(yes, of course I hear them played perfectly when I am with my teacher).

Thumbs up

I've been working through the 30 Etudes the last few months. Yesterday my wife got me the book with the 4 play along CDs for Father's Day. Good stuff! It makes it so much more fun to have the accompianment when playing them. It also puts them in to context better. I immediately put the first CD in and played along with the first 5 Etudes and it sounds so cool. I would highly reccomend this book/CD pakage if you are working on these etudes.
