| I have the Barenreiter. It runs about $60, but it comes with facsimiles of the first five known editions of all six suites, including the Anna Magdalena Bach manuscript (the closest thing to the original we have), as well as a relatively short piece of scholarship on the suites. Also included is a modern score based on these five editions, with every noticeable discrepancy between them notated.
Certainly worth the investment. I like Ellison's edition largely for his fingerings, which make more sense to me than most. He also took pains to use A.M. Bach's bowings as much as possible, which are considerably different from most modern transcriptions. I don't believe there is a "clean" version of it from Slava, since the point of Paul's edition is the bowings and fingerings. |
