Question vivaldi bass concerto d minor

i recently found some sheet music for a vivaldi bass concerto in d minor. i was wondering if anyone had an opinion on the concerto itself. i kinda like the idea of a bass concerto in d minor, and i wanted to know a little bit more about it before i got into it. i cant find any recordings.....

Well, I'm pretty sure Vivaldi didn't actually write any concertos for double bass, so it must be a transcription of a piece for another instrument. Do you have any more info on the music, like an opus number, or RV number, or at least the publisher/editor? Then we might be able to help you find a recording of the original version.

You would most likely find a cello or violin version of this on CD. Unless a bassist has recorded this in the past, but that is probably not likely. I have played most of the Vivaldi Cello Sonatas when I was in college, and those are easily found on CD and sheet music. Very nice and not to difficult either. Also pretty easy on the fingers.

I have a book of 6 Vivaldi sonatas transcribed for bass, edited by Lucas Drew, and published by G. Schirmer.

The fourth sonata is in D minor. I have not played the 4th, but the 1st and 2nd are very nice, mostly the "meat and potatoes" section of the bass, very little thumb position.

Regarding the Vivaldi book you just described, are many of them for solo tuning or in clefs other then bass?

vivaldi

The book I described is for double bass in orchestra tuning. While I don't have it with me to confirm, I believe it is mostly bass clef with some tenor clef. I will check when I get home.

Is this what you found?

scroll down its the first of the Vivaldi selections. If it is you'll notice its actually in A Minor and it is originally for Violin. Its transcribed by Sankey. The cover is a misprint. It translates pretty well to bass. Here's a recording of itzhak perlman playing it. Its gorgeous.
