I have recently been posed a question by one of my mentors who is beginning to write a new piece. He asked me, "what do bassists like to play?" And I couldn't come up with a clear answer.
So I pose the question to you... what do you like to play?

So I pose the question to you... what do you like to play? | There isn't any one particular thing. It's all about context for me, and given different contexts, all of those techniques could be either just what is needed, or completely inappropriate. I want to play with good musicians. I want to play good music. I want to deal with competent, friendly yet professional people who know how to communicate.

The composer should feel free to write whatever, with only regards to the physical limitations of the instrument (not the player). It's the player's job to be the composer's advocate. |

If I had a fixed idea in my head - then it would not be spontaneous improvisation, but rather, me imposing my musical vision on others...
