Yup, totally ballsy and FTW+awesome move. Probably the biggest "quit" in all of metal history.

I mean who quits Metallica?

That guy.

wow,

I remember getting the binge and purge box set when I was a youngster and watching Jason jam on various Wals and Alembics...all on vhs of coarse.

On a side note, I think said Alembic is on display at Guitar Center SF. Good times.

Poor old Jason! He was so good, but totally inaudible in AJFA! What a shame that was! Good on him for leaving Metallica. Takes guts to leave a band that big.

I mean, what could he do? All that time with the band, the fans never really accept him and neither does the rest of the band. They still treated him like the new guy, the replacement guy.

The guy isn't Rodney Dangerfield, give him a little respect.

That was my initial thought when I first heard it (and just watched it again). Very surprising considering it was some lame VH1 TV special. However I dunno what it is/was about his Sadowskys in particular, nobody else who plays them gets that tone. His just crush. I've thought about getting an exact copy of his main 5'er. Just telling Roger, "WHatever you do, make it sound like THAT!" haha

I got to meet him finally when he was with Voivod and playing with Ozzy on the '03 Ozzfest. Was totally shaking when I got to say hi and shake his hand and he signed my t-shirt. Most humble guy in the world, and just shrugs off comments (like mine ) of "Dude you're my fekking idol" and goes about his way and smiles. Awesome.

I saw him shine as the front man at a show in Dallas years ago when James was out sick during that stop on the tour. I thin it was summer of 99 or 2000. He did the right thing when he moved on. He put up with a lot of BS for the amount of talent he brings to the table. He deserved better and finally did something about it. Good for him.

Busted out Doomsday for the Destroyer last night and rocked some early Jason in honor of this. After revisiting that, it's not difficult to see why he was picked to replace Cliff. Great stuff.

the rumor was that the reason the bass on "and justice for all..." was mixed so quietly (you can't even hear it) was to 'haze' Jason for stepping into such a great position from Flotsam & Jetsam. the real reason was that Jason's playing in Metallica actually put Cliff to shame and a big part of Metallica's fame was due to riding on Cliff's "Legend"s coattails. Everyone who heard Cliff's solos knew he was a bass giant (true) and automatically assumed that his playing during their songs was equally as flabbergasting (even though you can't hear much of his bass during songs either.) after we got to hear the master of puppets bass track, etc. we know that it wasn't true. on "Garage Dayz Re-revisited" we got to hear Jason for the first time and he was very impressive. now that we can hear Jason on "justice for jason" thanks to the fan remixed and readded bass tracks, we see the real reason Jaymz didn't want people to hear it, he didn't like it that a young punk who played bass with a pick could go toe-to-toe, riff-to-riff with him, with razor-accurate alternate picking. Jason really does steal the show on "and justice for Jason" and I don't blame him for quitting, he was a true musician having to deal with rockstars who cared more about other things (haircuts, eyeliner, singing, substances...)

btw:none of this is probably true, but Jason rules anyway!

and yes the bass is mixed too loudly on these but all the better to drive the point
