I was devastated when I heard the news. I was lucky enough to see Jaco live three times (once with WR, once with Word Of Mouth, and once with Kenwood Dennard and Hiram Bullock) and still have my autographed copy of his debut LP (framed in archival, uv blocking frame).

A few months ago I got to see 'The Way of the Groove' when they played in a small club in D.C. Both of Jaco's twins have his innate sense of time and groove and Felix phrases uncannily like his father. Check them out if you get the chance.

In a macabre coincidence, Josef Zawinul passed away on the twentieth anniversary of Jaco receiving the beating that would end his life ten days later. Sept. 11, 2007

RIP Maestro and Jaco...

I just found out that Joe Zawinul died on September 11 today and I thought the same thing. Very strange coincidence that he died the same day Jaco got the crap beat out of him 20 years earlier, one 35 years old, the other 75 years old. RIP indeed, Jaco and Maestro

The greatest ever, and definitely my hero musically. Too bad he was such a mess personally. His mark on both bass playing and music is indelible. Three Views of a Secret is a jazz masterpiece, and should be in the standard rep of everybody who plays jazz. I try to play it in my own humble way at every gig. And his sound changed the face of electric bass forever.

Bless you, man; you're still sorely missed.

And 20 years later, in the same week, Zawinul is gone as well. A very bad week for music.

NPR!

That sure was such a great spot for Jaco on NPR!
I will be gigging the fretless tonight in his honor.

Jaco, thank you.

I heard the NPR story too, was fantastic.

Here's the link:
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/s...oryId=14578299

I think I'll create a new thread for it so it doesn't get missed.

Outside of the MANY stylistic contributions ... how many of us have fretless basses because of him? I (for one) had my '69 Jazz modded as a direct result. I would also credit him with elevating the status of Reliced (especially Fender Basses) instruments.

I had a chance to hang with him when he passed through town with the CC Riders - it was 20 miles out of my way, so I passed. BAD CHOICE!!! Our guitar player went, and told me I made THE MISTAKE OF MY LIFE - he was right! One of my DUMBEST decisions I ever made.

GOD BLESS YOU JACO!

I'm a young-in, and only have dabbled in Jaco...

but I can honestly say, in some small way (by watching his videos), he has imparted me with some of his wisdom.

Thank you Jaco.

Ouch, I feel for you man...

I almost missed the Blues Alley gig where I got Jaco's autograph, I didn't hear about it until about 3 hours before it started. I was lucky, he was very open and friendly to me and my friend who were just in our early 20's at the time.

That NPR segment on Jaco really was great. I liked what Marcus Miller said about how he not only misses Jaco, but also everything that Jaco would have gone on to do.
