Does anyone know the story of how George Porter Jr. got this nickname? I've heard so many.

i don't know anything about it, but i would guess that he broke a string at a gig and didn't have any spares to replace it so he only played the 3 remaining strings for the rest of the gig

That's one of the stories I've heard. The other is that when he got his first bass 2nd hand, it only had three strings on it and he never bothered to replace it for the longest time.

Gov't Mule has a song on their newest CD dedicated to him called "3 String George." That's what sparked my interest in it.

If I'm not mistaken, one of his old Fenders G-string peg broke off and he just used the remaining three for a period of time.

However, don't take this response as gospel.
