If we are talking about so called "legends" id go with the standard

Burton
Lee
Etc.

However, being probably on the younger side of this forum im inclined to pick bassists that I looked up to when learning.

-Mark Hoppus (Blink-182/+44) plays what the music needs and generally fun to watch
-Adam Russell (Story of the Year/D.R.U.G.S) if you have ever seen either of these bands live you will understand
-Tye Zamora (Alien Ant Farm)
-Roger Manganelli (Less Than Jake)
-Jeph Howard (The Used)

Anthony Jackson
Jimmy Johnson
Abe Laboriel
Will Lee
(probably) John Patitucci - or Marcus Miller, or Nathan East, or...

There's way too many guys who deserve to be on the list, but these are at or near the top for me. I'm most definitely into the "studio" players like these guys - even if some are well known for their own solo work.
