I thought Bona's was tuned E-C, but I could be wrong.

I have a friend that tunes his 5-string E-C. He's a TBer, but doesn't come on much. I tune my 6 EADGCF, so that's almost the same, right?

i do

i strung it originally to learn heads and transcribe solos but then i ended up doing almost all of that work on piano and upright (oh well). Now i mainly do funk gigs with my electric. either way it's come in handy.

I know that his 5v'er Y/Y is E-C, but he has another maple topped Monarch that is ADGC, asnd 2 other E-G 4 string Y/Y's... one fretted and the other fretless.

That was a big opart of my motivation as well, plus I'm working on a solo set, which makes that tuning helpful for me.

I tuned that way in the 90s. High B but close enough.

I've thought of doing a 5'er E-C for "standard" jazz gigs so I can ge a little more solo range. But for smooth jazz I like to have the low B. Not as many solos in smooth jazz either. A 6 would be ideal, but for me the extra string seems to get in the way and those necks are just a little too wide for my little hands.

Maybe I need to start looking for another 5'er...

Back in the early 90's I was in a major Steve Swallow mode, and had a Koa Carvin tuned E-C, buttery, rich tone. I was fortunate enough to play in a duo and trio setting with a piano player who let me stretch out. At times, we got into this whole Bill Evans/Jim Hall but lower duo thing.

Some of the best musical fun I have ever had in my life.

It was great for learning lead lines, and how to play chords. I still have a 5 strung that way.

hmm...koa

I have my first jazz duo gig (w/the E-C bass) in Athens this Saturday and I'm going to be using a looping pedal and comp'ing chords under him... Should be a learning experience.

I like 5's (tried the 6 route, didn't dig it), so my intentions are to bring either a B-G and E-C 5'ver, or B-G and Fretless 4 to most gigs these days.

.... so anyother cats I should check out?
