Abraham Laboriel

Hi,

Yesterday I had the privilage to meet Abraham Laboriel. I just wanted to share how special, full of love and humbleness this person is. And not only because of he´s one of the best bass players on this planet but he´s also a born again christian too.

God bless you Abraham!

One of my all time heroes! Had the pleasure of seeing him live with Koinonia back in the '80s, amazing player.

It may be a language factor in play, we generally say born again not new born. Brother Abraham has been on that walk for decades. In his on band and with others like Ron Kenoly

I worked on a project with Abraham a few years ago. The man is an amazing bass player, but I was perhaps even more struck by his humble attitude.

After recording a characteristically awesome bass part, he would emerge from the recording booth into the control room and ask, "How was that? Is there anything you'd like to hear done differently?"

He was truly there to serve.

Awesome player!!! He was the first bass player that I personally ever heard use chords on the bass...it was an epiphany for me!

He is amazing! I saw him with Hands at The Baked Potato in LA and he was the best bassist on the planet that night! If you have a chance to see him live I highly recommend it.

I saw him on a Henry Mancini concert on TV just when I started playing bass- of course I didn't know who he was. It was only years later when I became aware of him through his work with Larry Carlton, and saw a picture of him in the Mancini days that I recognized him and his first bass.

My all-time favorite electric bass solo is by Abe. It's on his song "Rio Samba" on a live Larry Carlton recording of which I had an unmarked cassette tape of, but I don't think it's "Mr. 335 Live In Japan". The perfect solo- starts out with an introductory phrase, builds and tells a story, and has a conclusion.

I also used GHS Brite-Flats on my StingRay becasue he used them on his fretless Sabre for all those CHIPs TV show chase scenes

John

Any old timers here remember a single sung by Andy Pratt called "Avenging Annie". OUTRAGEOUS bass by Abe!

I wonder how many bassists were influenced by him without realizing they were influenced by him. To me his is proof that you can use "Solo" bass techniques to play "Functional" bass lines. This thread led me to do some YouTube research as I'm vaguely familiar with Abe's work and I stumbled on this nice little documentary:

I know that Victor Wooten admits that he got the Open Hammer Slap technique from Abe. Plus there are alot of recordings that he has done that you've heard and don't know it's him.

His Funk Bass video helped me a lot when I was starting out. I copped his flamenco rolls before I ever heard Victor Wooten using them. This guy is an ocean of groove based technical knowledge and conveys a genuine joy in his playing.

An often overlooked bassist when we start listing our "inspiration".or "best of" players.

I had the pleasure of seeing him perform with Al Jarreau at Pine Knob in Michigan...an amazing bassist.
