Hi,
Yesterday I had the privilage to meet Abraham Laboriel. I just wanted to share how special, full of love and humbleness this person is. And not only because of he´s one of the best bass players on this planet but he´s also a born again christian too.

After recording a characteristically awesome bass part, he would emerge from the recording booth into the control room and ask, "How was that? Is there anything you'd like to hear done differently?"
He was truly there to serve. |

It was only years later when I became aware of him through his work with Larry Carlton, and saw a picture of him in the Mancini days that I recognized him and his first bass.
My all-time favorite electric bass solo is by Abe. It's on his song "Rio Samba" on a live Larry Carlton recording of which I had an unmarked cassette tape of, but I don't think it's "Mr. 335 Live In Japan". The perfect solo- starts out with an introductory phrase, builds and tells a story, and has a conclusion.
I also used GHS Brite-Flats on my StingRay becasue he used them on his fretless Sabre for all those CHIPs TV show chase scenes

To me his is proof that you can use "Solo" bass techniques to play "Functional" bass lines.
