This is a thread dedicated to shedding light on the under-appreciated metal bassist's of the world. Yes yes, we all know how good bassists like Harris, Burton, Webster and Butler are, so there is no need to mention them. I want to hear of the bassists who play in metal bands who are good, but are relatively unknown to the wider bass community.
For me, Ryan Martinie of Mudvayne is an absolute GUN bass player. Writes amazing bass lines that are sensitive and creative while still managing to pump out the low end massive sound for Mudvayne.
So come on, shed some light on the skilled metal bassists who rarely get some decent recognition!!

John Campbell from Lamb of God has got some really great playing on their albums. He spends a good bit of time mirroring the guitars which is impressive simply due to the speed and accuracy needed to do so. He also does some great work on some of the more melodic songs such as the opening to "Walk With Me In Hell". If you listen to LoG's songs without the bass, you can hear a significant difference; he's definitely doing a great job holding the bottom end!

| | | Ryan Martinie is awesome! He plays some really epic stuff in Mudvayne, and although he's not pushing the boundary too much (finger tapping, slap etc all been done) he still rocks the bass.
I'm actually gathering some money to buy a Warwick thumb, much like what he plays. I love the tone so much |

For metal im really getting into progressive jazz metal type stuff. Sean Malone of cynic, aghora and gordian knot is amazing on fretless as well as his aghora replacement Alan Goldstein. I also love the bass work and everything else for that mater in The Faceless, which is amazing stuff, if you havent heard its death metal with a super progressive edge.
Also the bassist from nonpoint deserves a mention, I just love his tone so much, makes me want a bongo.

He's getting more and more attention but is still relatively unheard of.
He is a BEAST on a fretless!

He's kinda like the Duff McKagan of heavy metal.

Big +1 to Tim Bagshaw with Electric Wizard. The basslines and presence he has on their early stuff is phenomenal.

Either way i completely agree with you, great at setting a solid foundation while keeping the songs interesting with little fills |
