I love how some of his basslines (ex:With or Without You) Are so simple but, just sound so good. What do you think guys?

Clayton is a good bassist but takes a lot of slagging because he doesn't nessecarily have the chops of some other bassists; either that or he just practices tons of restraint. He does either way because that's what playing alongside The Edge requires. He reminds me in many ways of McCartney and players like that.

I love him. His genius is in his simplicity. Check out "Until the End of the World" for one of my all-time favorite songs and bass lines. Great, great tone -- always.

Huge influence - plays what fits the song, no more.

His lines are so reserved. They are perfect for the music. The Edge can wank all he wants but Clayton's groove is what sets the...erm...groove.

i agree, but the edge doesn't 'wank' imo. what he plays is equally simple to claytons lines, he just uses lot's of funky effects to create a nice and full soundscape

I think he's great, his early bass lines were pretty unique and drew more attention than his current ones (just an observation - not being critical ). Clayton does what the rest of the band does - they play the song - whatever the song needs they try to deliver - no grandstanding - but because of that they get high-lighted naturally.

"New Year's Day" is a nice example - very simple, yet melodic and catchy.

I think he gets a lot of undeserved slagging. Yeah he's no Victor Wooten or Billy Sheehan or ...(insert name of your favourite genius) but he does what's needed for the song (as was said above) and at the end of the day that works for U2.

Great point - I do miss the more "aggressive" lines from Boy (Stories for Boys) and October (With a Shout) and War (Two Hearts Beat as One) - but he's evolved his sound as the band has. Achtung Baby had some lines that are . . . well . . . funky. Pop as well. Some nice work on the new album.

Adam is one of my main influences. I try to combine his simplicity and power with McCartney's melodicism.

My early bass days I was a Adam Clayton wannabe. My sound today reminds me alot of Adam when I hear myself played back. Undoubtedly my main influence!!

Really knows how to play for The Song. Unlike a whole lotta other bass players on the planet. Deserves respect.

Plays what fits the music. Not going to blow anyone away with technical wizardry.

Has more fame and fortune garnered from playing what fits the music than all of the technical wizards combined.

Very nice...his tones are usually more interesting than what he is playing, but his lines work very well. Having a "reserved" and simplistic drummer like Larry Mullen also helps, they match together very well.

lol i love how if you play simple bass lines in a local or small band, you suck, but if you play simple bass lines in a band that is HUGE, you are "a genius in your simplicity"
