My bass was old, but I spruced it up. Now, it's young again, kind of like a cougar with a facelift/boob job combo.

when i was a kid in my early 20's, we had a guy audition who was in his 50's and he was very good but it just didn't work out because of the age thing. sorry, but i don't think it's age discrimination as much as knowing it would hurt our chances of getting booked. and quite frankly i wouldn't blame a band of kids if they turned me down, either.

I'll proudly admit to "reverse age marginalization" (or discrimination, whatever you wanna call it).

I won't work with musicians who are younger than a certain age. I can't say exactly what that age is, but it's probably somewhere around 28, 29... Basically I've found that all the musicians I've met who were born in the 80's or later have a really different set of values & priorities than I do, especially when it comes to basic crap like SHOWING UP ON TIME or CALLING AHEAD WHEN YOU'RE GONNA BE LATE (OR A NO-SHOW).

I dunno what it is these kids are learning in school, or on the job, or from their parents, but it sure ain't RESPONSIBILITY!

Oh yeah... and GET OFF MY LAWN!

Our 5 - piece band is now a 4. We had to let the keys go (25 y/o) because, between wife/girlfriend dramas, not showing up for previously agreed-upon rehearsals, and his inability to communicate/be reliable led us to toss him. He was easy to get along with, good attitude otherwise, had a great voice, was proficient on his instrument, knowledgeable theorist; a trained musician. Even though his preferred stylings were a little different from ours, we could have worked things out. BTW, we're all in our 50s, have full time jobs, families, etc., so practice time is precious.

We're doing well w/o keys. Even though I'm having to pick up some vocal harmonies We may eventually add keys again sometime.

Note to younger guys: if you wanna play, you gotta walk the walk.

Man, that's a pet peeve of mine! Absolutely no responsibility is taught any more. I get students like this from time to time. I explain it to them carefully before we start. One screw up and they're gone. That includes putting in a certain amount of practice time per week. Just a waste of money-their parent's of course. Luckily most of my students are more mature.
