Started when I was 14. I'm 32 now. My uncle gave me a bass and a gee-tar that were collecting dust in his house.

I started playing organ at 7, guitar at 14, then bass at 17.

Wrong forum, BTW.

Started playing at 13/14 (1977). I bought a brand new Fender Musicmaster and a Yamaha 30 watt 115 amp with money I made bagging groceries at a local supermarket. When I graduated HS in '80 my parents gave me a choice for my graduation present of a trip to the beach with my buddies or a brand new Rick. I took the Rick.

Started on Bass in 1962 aged 19, I still gig on a regular basis so up to now I guess that with 45 years in I'm the oldest at 64 next month.
What none of us realised at the time was that our contemporys would age with with us.

Well, in 1974, $150 for a used Fender probably was not too uncommon. I started in 1975 on a used '73 Fender Precision I bought for $200. In those years the "newer" one would have been worth slightly more (ironic). If one was dinged up or scratched, you got a price break! The rather dubious "Vintage Value" craze hadn't started yet. To put that $150 in proper perspective, in 1974 the minimum wage was $1.60/hr. Anyone who owned a Fender new or used worked their a** off to get it. BTW, I also bagged groceries to earn that Fender. Getting a Rickenbacker for graduation at that time would have been a HUGE gift. Those were already between $700-$800 in 1975. Unless you consider the low wages, you just don't see the implications. If you wanted a bass that was relatively tunable and playable, Fenders and Ricks were about all there was to choose from. Asian basses that are really pretty fine now;- back then were so bad they weren't even playable. So us old farts had to slave away for our precious "vintage" gear. Having a nice guitar meant you had to really give up something else;- like eating! And we had to walk to and from rehearsals uphill in the snow barefooted, even in the summer ... dragging these huge Peaveys on a sledge... Oh, those were the good old days....

So how's this;- turns out my used Fender was built on my 14th birthday according to a reply I got from Fender when I enquired about it in 1976. So I started at 15 and have been playing 32 years. The older I get, the better I was ....

Started out as a cello player in 1966 - my Junior High School jazz band needed a bass player and I was asked to try it by the music teacher. That was in 1973. So I guess that makes it 34 years. My bass seems to actually be older than a lot of people here.....

Well, you got me on the age part

Started playing DB in 1961 at the age of 10, got my first EB in 1963, so I'm into year 46 of playing, but I'm only a tender 55 years old (soon to be 56 ).
