Check out Al Turner absolutely KILLING IN THE POCKET on his Ken Smith with the great Earl Klugh: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsFyWABrUGM
I know that Marcus killed on the original recording of "Mount Airy Road", but I really how Al and his Smith sound!!! Also, Al is one of the masters of using and not abusing space in his lines. The man on the sax is off the hook!!!!

Seriously, very nice. I did keep waiting for someone to call for a price check over the PA though.

Marcus Miller played on that track originally. Al Turner is hitting it on the video, but he is playing the exact same line Marcus played. That's not a bad thing! |

A Groove is a Terrible Thing to Waste! | You really piqued my interest so i checked out the clip...
He's a great player indeed ...but that bass tone epitomizes everything I associate with elevatoresque "smooth jazz" (hate that term) from the 1980's. I think it's horrible...sorry. That Smith sounds way too thin in the mix IMO.
YMMV
To each his own.... |

But yeah, that signature Smith 'burp' can be annoying at times. If I ever have the money to buy a Smith, I'd do everything in my power to NOT have that sound. Dunno if Smith can accommodate though! |

Some guys really dig that sound though ...Maybe its just the zing from the stainless steel strings that I find so irritating (the antithesis of a good bass sound IMO).
While I was listening to the clip.. I couldnt help thinking how much better it would have sounded with a jazz bass..both pickups on full. The tonality of the jazz suits that type of groove to a tee...
I'll shut up now..lol |
