AL TURNER KILLING IN THE POCKET ON A KEN SMITH!!!!!

Sign in to disble this ad
Check out Al Turner absolutely KILLING IN THE POCKET on his Ken Smith with the great Earl Klugh:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsFyWABrUGM

I know that Marcus killed on the original recording of "Mount Airy Road", but I really how Al and his Smith sound!!! Also, Al is one of the masters of using and not abusing space in his lines. The man on the sax is off the hook!!!!

Never kill in your pocket. It's way easier to pull off a clean shot if you put it on the ground and kill it.

Seriously, very nice. I did keep waiting for someone to call for a price check over the PA though.

That tune is from the George Benson/Earl Klugh Collaboration album from around 1987.. Marcus Miller played on that track originally. Al Turner is hitting it on the video, but he is playing the exact same line Marcus played. That's not a bad thing!

Ahhhh that bass tone makes me cry. Way too zingy. Good playing though.

I am a huge fan of Al Turner and am floored by how good his Smith sounds!

You really piqued my interest so i checked out the clip...

He's a great player indeed ...but that bass tone epitomizes everything I associate with elevatoresque "smooth jazz" (hate that term) from the 1980's. I think it's horrible...sorry. That Smith sounds way too thin in the mix IMO.

YMMV

To each his own....

Just remember, that's a youtube clip. Not the greatest sound quality. But yeah, that signature Smith 'burp' can be annoying at times. If I ever have the money to buy a Smith, I'd do everything in my power to NOT have that sound. Dunno if Smith can accommodate though!

Despite it being a you tube clip, I think the signature sound comes through pretty well and its the same sound I always associate with a Smith bass....I dont know whether Id describe it as a 'burp' though; more like thin, honkey/nasal. Some guys really dig that sound though ...Maybe its just the zing from the stainless steel strings that I find so irritating (the antithesis of a good bass sound IMO).

While I was listening to the clip.. I couldnt help thinking how much better it would have sounded with a jazz bass..both pickups on full. The tonality of the jazz suits that type of groove to a tee...

I'll shut up now..lol

I respect all opinions with regard to liking/disliking the Smith sound. I personally LOVE THE SMITH SOUND and as a consequence, will have my very first Smith within the coming week! To each his tone............

I really, really dislike the Smith tone. That said though, the playing all around was absolutely killer.

+1 That midrangy 'burp' annoys me but I like everything else about Smiths!
