Years ago before I'd ever heard any Alain Caron, there was a transcription of "Slam The Clown" in Bass Player Magazine. I read through it a few times and thought to myself "aimless atonal wanking, this tune sucks!"

About a year ago I finally got to check out that very YouTube clip of "Slam The Clown", and two things struck me: 1) Alain has one of the deepest grooves of any bassist I've ever heard! It is freakin' scary how tight the pocket is from start to finish on that clip.

And 2) I was right, "Slam The Clown is aimless atonal wanking...but because of Alain's monster groove, it doesn't matter. It's an awesome tune despite the material.

If you like Alain Caron's slapping you should check out a tune called WAKE UP CALL from Uzeb's live triple album released in the early 90s.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeleyAMhasU

Wake Up Call starts around 3.10 into the video. On the CD it's much longer than this - I've got a transcription of it somewhere. It's scary.

Simply put,Mr.Caron's playing is awesome.I got familiar with his fretless playing in the 90's.As that was mostly what he was known for.So smooth. One of the best, for sure.
FAST-FORWARD:
This dude can apparently do it all!!I have NEVER,NEVER,in all my days of playing seen a player with such an economical,limited-motion slap'n'pop technique.Looks like he can go for days.
I certainly wish I could develop such a smooooth technique like that.Don't get me wrong,I'm certainly happy with my abilities in what I can play (slap'n'popping).
But,it seems that if someones within a 8-foot radius of me,LOOK OUT!!I just may put your eye out with my"hands-flailing-away" technique.
Awesome player,indeed.

I can't imagine how much woodshedding he did to come up with that technique and perfect it. His action must be extremely low as well!

I went to one of his clinics last year, and while he certainly does have chops, something is missing. I find that his music lacks a certain soul to it.

+1 However, the chops and time and groove are great to my ear. The tunes, like with many of these 'chops' guys, are mostly uninteresting. I like his playing, but it's more for the impressive mechanics than the 'music'.

I can agree with this. The thing is he plays with a 'fusion' sense as opposed to a 'funk' sense even though the music is funk based. Sorta the way the Japanese approach Fusion with complete technicality devoid of what we perceive as 'soul'. I would assume they are putting their soul into what they do! Clean and sterile is what they do. We're more of the greasy, dirty, soulful variety!

Just because it doesn't speak to you, doesn't mean it lacks soul.

That could be true for some of his tunes, except the "play" album...but Uzeb wer a great band!
Anyway, Caron is a freaking monster....

I find his solos very melodic and full of expression. I'm not a fan of monster bass players. I find a lot of their music self indulgent. A lot of them are big names, but they don't float my boat. I find Alain to be quite expressive in his playing.

I've been a big fan for probably 15-20 years. Got all of the UZEB albums and his solo albums.

One thing I found in his song writing that is cool, you'll hear two sections that sound the same, but after you check it out, the two sections are completely different. D-Code has a couple of sections like that.

I think the best UZEB album is "Noisy Nights". A lot of good stuff there. Also, if you're a real fan, check out the video they made in their farewell tour. I think it's called "The LAst Concert". Amazing that it's only three guys. Michel Cusson and Paul Brochu kick ass in their own rite.

As someone else mentioned, very melodic and sensitive soloing, but he CAN get nasty too. It has been a bit disappointing that his last couple of albums have had a lot of programmed drums.
