| | | | I'd be much more impressed with someone who can actually improv on the changes to Giant Steps in a convincing way. Patitucci's solo on GS from one of his recordings is a masterpiece. Very melodic, not just hacking over the changes. I just posted this in another thread but I am becoming less and less impressed with sheer acts of athleticism and acrobatics on the bass. Given guys like Wooten, Manring, Burbridge , Miller, etc...I am (way) more interested in creativity and musicianship. |

Got nothing to do with the relevance of the piece.
It also has nothing to do with what Coltrane did.
To do what he is doing no understanding of jazz theory is necessary...none at all.-sorry to be so blunt. | I guess you didn't watch the whole video, he does a walking bass line with his left hand - not just 'root notes'. And he sings at the end...don't think that requires any jazz theory at all.

I agree... pretty unique though. |
Not really, articulating on a different instrument is a lot harder.
I get what you mean though, it's amazing but pointless. But you have to tip your hat to the guys skills. I mean, that is just ridiculous. |

That said, that is something most people couldn't do if they practice all day every day of their life. |

But what's really the difference between the two? | It's impressive to me because there're are musicians who play just the bass or piano as thier main instruments that can't play this with a lot of practice,and he's doing it on both...granted it's not something that I will want to see or hear after about 5 mins.but nonetheless it got my attention. |

| Okay, if we take out the "rap" part I think I can agree with you on this.
Clearly a talented guy, he put a lot of work into this piece, it's really well executed. You have to give him credit. You have to.

bravo! |

And yet, the same people hatin' will later drag out something that's clearly a boring showboat piece itself and declaim loudly how great it is. Classic internet!
Some good comments from the more knowledgeable jazz-oriented people here in the thread though, so it makes it worth it to read though, even if not looking for Alpha Pack popcorn value ; } |

He was doing this kind of stuff years ago and actually was dubbed "The Man with Two Brains"
These guys only wish they could do it as well as StanleyJorden.

He somehow even got some pop fame during MTV days, which is rather unusual when someone is of his talent ; }
I read a bunch of stuff he wrote on the net too, when I was doing some research for some extended range bass concepts, and he seemed like a pretty incredible guy. |
