i can't think of a good title, but i know i've seen people arguing about flea vs stanley and vic and those guys so i thought i'd post this video up. i thought it was a pretty cool mix. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A13mm...eature=related |

| | | whoa man... i was thinking of that video when i read that title.
its like your in my head
i think that anyone who is a sane musician has to respect fleas improvosational skills. it usually isn't that over the top, but its definitely a different experience when you go to a RHCP concert and you see em break out into some crazy mamma jam. im not really sure if that's what its like in a vic/miller concert though (seeing that i have never been to one). so yeah. there are my 2 cents.

The youtube comments, as always, are fun to read. The world is full of idiots. LOL |

And as someone who saw Vic, that was similar to Vic's show, obviously with a totally different kind of bassist though.

I don't altogether agree with the above comment. His playing can be incredibly difficult. I do agree on the unique quality though. It's a perfect synthesis of rhythmic and melodic sensibility.

But this video isn't Jazz. It's a funky 1-4-5 blues-based jam. It's fun to listen to, and Flea does a respectable job being funky and improvising over the blues, but it's just not jazz.
I'm not gonna into what *is* or *isn't* jazz (aside from that vid), I just wouldn't put Flea on the same improvisational level as Stanley, or any true jazz bassist (like Mark Egan, Jeff Andrews, Tom Kennedy, Dave Carpenter, to name very, very few...).
Nonetheless, I hadn't seen that video before and I think it's pretty cool. |

Flea can lay down a killer groove for sure, and for that, you have take your hat off to him, and appreciate what he does for what it is.
The fact that Vic, Stan the man etc., have a deep seeded technical knowledge and ability that is above that of Flea's, means that they are able to produce music at a completely different level when they choose to do so.
I think we should appreciate Flea's work for what it is, high energy funk and rock groove that is no walk in the park, and at the same time also appreciate that Vic and his peers are able to take us to other places as well.
From the vid that was posted, it is apparent that Stan is able to appreciate Flea's work, and for that reason, maybe the faithful minions at TB should do the same?!

Flea is definitely unique among his contemporaries and the RHCPs have definitely carved out their place in rock and I think a lot of that has to do with Flea and also the rest of the band's funkier than average chops.
