Absolutely a great bassist - think of the lame jam band bassists out there today then go listen to Elizabeth Reed or Whipping Post.

I have the utmost respect for the late Berry Oakley's bass playing skills. Besides having a incredible feel for the Brothers unique brand of music -- for me, his is the quintessential J bass tone.

I like Berry Oakley so much that before I had even heard him, I had a bass modelled (sort of) after The Tractor, this one named The Plow.

See?

Great bassist. Great band. One of the groups that originally got me interested in (non classical) music). However, with all due respect and love to the late Oakley, I personally preferred David "Rook" Goldflies and what he added to the mix. But that is just my opinion.

Goldflies was great in that band too, I have some videos of him really ripping it up. I dug what Lamar Williams brought to the Allmans and Sea Level as well. I also love Woody and Oteil, the bass chair in the Allmans always had some bad mother-shut-your-mouths in it.

It's interesting how the Allman Bros. have become like Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers -- personnel come and go, but the great music and sound remain.

Exactlly! Their songs are now standards to be filled out by whatever great player they have in the band at the time. Same with the Dicky Betts bands, his bass players like Pedro Arevalo, Dave Shotz<sp> smoke too!

Berry Oakley was a great bassist. I love listening to Live at the Fillmore. the dual lead guitars are great. I also like what I've heard of Lamar Williams. And of course Oteil Burbridge is great!

Amen! With the exception of my bass teacher, Berry was my single biggest influence. Factor in that my teacher was influenced by him as well, and you know where I came from!

As a momento, a friend gave me an OLD OLD Allman Brothers concert t-shirt from his collection. Both Berry and Duane were alive when it was printed. I used to carry it to gigs for inspiration.

Barry and then Lamar provided the foundation for one of the great rock bands.
Two drummers, two guitarists, then two keyboard players, but always one bassist holding it all together.
Counter melodies all over the place, not much root-hugging for these guys.

Dave Schools, in my opinion. Tone doesn't suit the band at all, and tries to stand out too much.
