| | I've got to admit it's getting better | | Join Date: May 2005 Location: Duluth, Georgia | | | I have the utmost respect for the late Berry Oakley's bass playing skills. Besides having a incredible feel for the Brothers unique brand of music -- for me, his is the quintessential J bass tone.

See?

However, with all due respect and love to the late Oakley, I personally preferred David "Rook" Goldflies and what he added to the mix. But that is just my opinion.

I also love Woody and Oteil, the bass chair in the Allmans always had some bad mother-shut-your-mouths in it.

Their songs are now standards to be filled out by whatever great player they have in the band at the time. Same with the Dicky Betts bands, his bass players like Pedro Arevalo, Dave Shotz<sp> smoke too!

As a momento, a friend gave me an OLD OLD Allman Brothers concert t-shirt from his collection. Both Berry and Duane were alive when it was printed. I used to carry it to gigs for inspiration.

Two drummers, two guitarists, then two keyboard players, but always one bassist holding it all together.
Counter melodies all over the place, not much root-hugging for these guys. |
