I met Alphonso once in an amp repair shop I was working in about 10 years ago...a true gentleman and truly one of the most unsung and under rated bassists around...much deserved accolades!

just picked up cobham/duke live in europe. love the playing on it by alphonso, one of the most underrated bassists out there. just killer groove and sense of harmony.

The very first song I ever heard him play on was when I was a kid and listening to Weather Report's Mysterious Traveler (I think I was 15)...on that album was one of the "grooviest" songs I had ever heard and to this day, is still one that gets to me "right here"... that is the track "Cucumber Slumber". He was bassist and co-composer...if you've never heard it, give it a listen...

Well deserved, congrats to 'Zo!

Kinda amazing that it took BP until 2010 to recognize him...

I think my favourite Weather Report albums are the ones that Alphonso played on. Really liked a lot of his solo stuff as well, for example Love's The Way I Feel ' Bout Cha, Stump and Involuntary Bliss. Does anybody know anything about the Fender he had with a natural body, jazz pick up in the neck position and P pick up in the bridge position? Looked very customised

Didn't Alphonso Johnson play on the Jeffrey Osbourne classic "stay with me tonight"?

Yep, and that's always one of the tracks I cite when someone asks me for an Alphonso recommendation. Because it's so not like his Weather Report or Cobham-Duke or solo album material...and yet he nails it like he was born to play it.
