Wink American idol 2010 bassist

Hi guys, I'm LOVING the bassist in the 2010 American Idol band. I think it's not Ricky Minor. Any clues to the bassist and what rig he's using? I think he's using an MTD?
anyway the whole band is great and the bass is way up in the mix.... all they need to do is mute the vocals and it would be perfect! :-)
cheers Geoff

Traditionally Rickey's the MD. I'll check....
He's still listed as MD on his site
http://rickeyminor.com/
There might be someone else doing primary bass chores-one of many LA Bassists could be doing that. That would be surprising....

I don't know about the bass, but man is the drummer murdering every song. The tempos are all dragging and it's like he has never heard these songs before in his life.

they do this every year. I believe it's a completely different band during the early weeks prior to public voting. Ricky and band will be on next week when the real competition starts. I'd imagine Ricky is too expensive to keep around and arrange songs for 80 lame singers.

honestly, i think rickey's bands on idol are pretty bad, too. they're ok when they play modern r&b, but they're awful when they try to play rock or country. and the drummer does that cymbal work all over the place that's really annoying me about drummers these days. plus i think rickey is more of a product of good networking skills than playing and arranging. even simon cracks on the band and how bad they can sound. good bass player, lousy conductor.

Boy,Jimmy, you must be a really accomplished musician to be able to come out here with such confidence and slam Ricky Minor, his drummer and the rest of the band the way you did.
Do you have any youtube videos of yourself that i might be able to check out for some inspiration and guidance on how to be more than just a "Networker"?

this is a discussion board, if you don't like an opinion, express your own and support it. Just because someone is better does not mean they can't be criticized. Anybody who has been president is a better politician than me. I can still criticize them

Ricky was playing on some of the stuff this week. May have been recorded previously - but he was there.

Regardless of what you think of the Band and the players - pretty darn good Gig. Play on National TV every week from January till May - in Prime Time, 2 nights a week for an average audience of 30 Million People.

The show has left its mark on Popular Music over the last 8 years - it is the show everyone wants to be on. Just having a single song performed can make a new release chart or minimally drive up sales substantially. I'd take the Gig and be glad every night I was there playing for sure.

I totally agree.I wish they would use a smaller band like this from time to time and locate it closer to the vocalists when the actual competition starts. It's got to be hard for Ricky to work from a balcony and being separated from the other players.

I agree, anyone who's tried to play covers knows how
hard it is to recreate studio recordings live with a reduced band. I was knocked out at how good this band/bassist was.
Also makes u realise how rare live music is on TV.

To me a large band playing pop or R&B tunes often seems to have less impact.
For example (some of us might be old enough to remember)the early Dave Letterman Band was truly dangerous I got so much inspiration from the way they put stuff together.
Their arrangements were so raw and powerful and it grooved so hard. The large band that followed, even though it was still good was just not as fat sounding.

+1

The World's Most Dangerous Band. Once Anton joined, and it was just Will, Syd, Anton and Paul, they were the main reason I would watch Dave. Check out some of those old youtube videos of the NBC Dave era and watch these guys just kill it every time.

right. those guys make rickey minor's band look one dimensional by comparison. rickey's band can do anything that's funky, and they do some really cool big band and jazz stuff. they struggle severely with anything else. once in a while they can pull out a good country tune, and the guitarist is the reason. that guy's fantastic. the other guys make everything else sound like new-school r&b guys playing it. and forget about rock...let's not even go there.

letterman's band can do it all. they sound authentic playing everything from the i love lucy theme to zeppelin to hip hop. whether it was the original 4 piece with steve jordan and hiram bullock, or even when someone's out, they are the best band that has ever been put together for a tv show, and it's not even close.
