Andrew Levy of the Brand New Heavies...

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok, so a friend just put me onto the Brand New Heavies and showed me this "acid jazz" as they call it.

I love it.

I want to know what else is out there like it???
I can't believe I've been missing out all this time. I've been really running dry on inspiration for a while now, and I feel I've struck gold again. I need to keep it coming though, can you guys help me in my search to find similar kinds of sounds that I can learn from.

Also, does anyone know what kind of setup is used to get the kind of sound that Andrew Levy gets from his Jazz bass??? I must know this.

Any help is greatly appreciate, thanks guys

Definitely check out Incognito... they have tons of albums, so start with "Beneath the Surface," "Adventures in Black Sunshine," and "Who Needs Love?" for the sound most similar to BNH.

I just put The Brand New Heavies CD Brother Sister on the other day after not having heard it in a long time. It's still a great CD and lots of great grooves and songs.

Also check out Mother Earth. Great band. Some stuff here.http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm...ndid=143737350

They are probably my favorite band and he is high up there on my list of favorite players - 1 or 2. Absolutely awesome band, I made a cd with 5 of their albums compiled and it's in constant rotation in my truck.

Glad you found them Bro, keep digging and you'll be happy.

Galliano... a vastly under rated band with lots of phat grooves. Check out 'when the plot thickens' album.

Yep, mother earth and galliano, definitely. Also check out sampler series like "The rebirth of cool" or "Mojo Club", you will find tons of the stuff there.

Have fun

Jamiroquai - another name for Gil-Scott Heron Certainly check out GSH - doing it way before acid jazz was even coined as a term.

I agree on the Incognito idea - my favourite album of theirs is 100 and Rising - it has some great tunes, really funky bass lines/grooves and even has a bass solo feature as the last track!!

I blew the dust off of my copy of Shelter by the Brand New Heavies recently.

Andrew lays down some absolutely Killin' grooves on that record, and even a great little mini solo on "You are the Universe"! I then went back and read his BP interview from a bunch of years ago - it was one of the issues with Rocco on the cover (Dec 97). I found it cool that they covered two great funk players that don't slap in the same issue.

What a great player! I'm really glad that I rediscovered his work.

+1 for Incognito. Randy Hope Taylor who plays on a lot of their stuff is a great bassist and lays down some great grooves.

100 And rising is my fave Incognito album too - great piece of work.

Big fan here, I love the way Andrew really grooves and makes the pocket. What a great band, my favorite vocalist is N'Dea.

The Incognito catalog alone will wear you out! Literally! Some very aerobic basslines to be had!
