I first heard him on TV with Henry Mancini, playing a cheapo no-name sort of bass with a GREAT sound. Then I got real into Larry Carlton and Abe was all over those LC solo albums. The BEST bass solo I've ever heard is a live version of "Rio Samba" from a Japanese import LP of Larry Carlton live. The solo just builds up out of the groove and is priceless.
He's also the sound of those old CHiPs TV show chase scenes. Abe said they'd put the video up on the screen in a studio, he'd improvise along to the video, and then they'd orchestrate the rest of the music to go along with his bass playing.

I remember hearing him with Lean-Luc Ponty when I was young...

I appreciate the fact that he never needed any gimmicks to become one of the most recorded bass players of our time. He's a solid player that plays from the heart and clearly enjoys the instrument. Of course, I also appreciate the fact that he's a committed Christian.

I first heard him with Koinonia. One day my wife had me listen to Gospel singer Ron Kenoly. I listened to a couple of tunes and told her that's got to be Abe playing bass.
Here's one of my favorite to play with my praise band: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOe5GpqFJrE
He's a fun guy to watch too.
Definitely one of my favorites.
