"When something opens up to your heart, that's all that needs to be done, and that is too monumental to even begin to describe"

I think that the high-priest hieroglyphic classes I took just paid off

Better, and brilliant too. Great picture and great quote - by a great man indeed.

There's a nobleness to Anthony in his character that is as admirable as his playing. His acceptance speech at Bass Player Live a few years ago showed just how dignified he can be.

You don't happen to be my cousin by any chance? I'm seriously doubting it, as he lives in North Carolina and doesn't play bass, but it's the same name and spelling. What are the chances.

Nope, I'm not your cousin. There aren;t too many Jonathan Hughes's around, though.

When something opens up to your heart
(meaning the deepest and most vital part of ourselves comes to a profound realization)
that's all that needs to be done
(meaning such a revelation is enough to satisfy and sustain us spiritually and intellectually),
and that is too monumental to even begin to describe.

IMHO.

Well, that's a pretty big stretch right there. Are you sure that's what AJ means?

How could you possibly be?

For something to "open up to your heart" it would have to what, drive right up next to your heart and pop open the big freight loading doors? It's such an arbitrary metaphor that it almost defies interpretation...or at the very least, it demands that you make assumptions about the speaker's intent that are completely unsubstantiated by the syntactical content of the sentence.

Nice caveat, Anthony...iow, "You cant describe what I'm talking about with words, even though I just wasted a bunch of words trying to describe what I'm talking about." That last part is simply AJ covering his azz.

and I dig this take on it as well.

That's one of the things I love about AJ so much, even a random quote of his can get people going.

I think he's talking about coronary bypass, how complicated it seems.

come let us sing and dance and make merriment ...

An artist concerned about how his art affects an audience might speak to / about that concern within the limits of language so imprecise it cannot accurately convey the thought. Music and mathematics may have a common basis but no formula can yet capture emotion. Those who cynically belittle the attempt to express these ideas are perhaps too occupied with the legal / physical / mundane. I salute all of you for whom Mr. Jackson's words have meaning, I applaud each of you who are moved to deeper thought and greater exploration by them, and I encourage those who find nothing in his comment to take up accounting.

What about those of us who are moved to deeper thought and greater exploration by calling attention to the limits of language -- or, more specifically, the limits of some language users -- in expressing these allegedly inexpressable emotions?

Where did this image and quote come from? Is it actually something he said? Or did you make the image yourself? Either way, it is cool and would make a good t-shirt. What's the chance of getting a full size image of it?
