Rutger Gunnarsson with Abba.
He detuned very slightly for the second run in order to create a thicker (slightly chorus-y) bass tone overall...

suposedly ryan martinie double tracked some of his lines on LD50 with fretted and fretless to get that weird effect he gets, don't actually know how true it is though so don't hold me too it!

Sting was reknown for double-tracking a lot of his lines with The Police. Especially stuff from Ghost In The Machine and Synchronicity.

Mick Karn has double-tracked a lot of his lines throughout his career.

Check out Peter Gabriel's "That Voice Again" off of So: Tony Levin doubled his Stingray bass in the right channel with Chapman Stick in the left channel. (Or maybe it's vice-versa, I'm not near my CD collection as I type this.)

Roger Waters of Pink Floyd did it on One of these Days although I can't be sure if it wasn't David Gilmour who did it.

LOL! Was there anything on that album that wasn't double- (if not triple-, or quardruple-)tracked?

I did it on one song on our last EP - the second bassline had a different sound (varying amounts of distortion, different plucking, pickup settings etc) and some of it was in a different octave. Really fattened up the mix!

Pretty sure that was just two basses at once (separate parts)

not double tracking

I could be wrong

Jason Newsted (if I remember correctly).
He said that every song he records, has an underlying distortion track, and track recorded with 18" speaker to give it more bottom end. And then off coarse the main track with clarity in top of those..
(sorry if I`m wrong, bit tired atm..)
