Any Bluegrass bassists?

Sign in to disble this ad
I ask, not because I am one, but because I'm going to be playing some improvised bluegrass with some friends soon ( a guitarist and a violin player).... only problem is I have no idea how you play a bluegrass bassline
So, does anyone have general suggestions for how to improvise a bluegrass bassline?

Fer instance, in hard rock it's fast and heavy on the root, with occasional little flourishes.

So, any advice from you Bluegrass players?

Ever play a Country & Western two-feel? Lots of root-five lather/rinse/repeat, with the same approach notes into chord changes that you'd use in a (pre-bop) swing band.

Simple lines, mostly 2 feel. Throw in a fifth every now and then. Rarely use a walkup or walkdown to the target note. Think hard about places to not play at all. If possible, use an acoustic bass or acoustic bass guitar. If you don't have one, stick a piece of foam under the strings near the bridge to deaden the tone and cut decay time.

Also, check out the DB side of this forum. There's a bluegrass section with other advice.
