A friend introduced me to Camel, and I really enjoyed the bass from Lady Fantasy from their album Mirage. The best part, for me at least, is the riff that starts around 9:10. 9:10!!!
The song: http://hearthebass.blogspot.com/2009...y-fantasy.html

I wasn't too fond of them either, but being in a prog band from Guildford myself meant that a lot of my "hairy" mates were into them and I went with the flow (peace!!).
I remember seeing them at the Guildford Civic Hall in 1975 when they played the "The Snow Goose" in its entirity and I must say I enjoyed it, but otherwise they didn't quite do it for me - definitely second division.

Never too impressed with the bass player unfortunately, I always feel their music offered a lot more for a bassist to work with. Still, he got the job done.
Lucky Andy Latimer's guitar playing was so damn good.

| | | | They were right up there with Soft Machine for me.
Looking back now they were kind of a "smooth" prog band, easy on the ears.
Good stuff. |

Soft Machine were very different - by the time you get to their 3rd album masterpiece, they are playing Free Jazz and have completely departed the rock scene - plus they are very far from "easy listening!!"
Just put on the first track of Soft Machine 3 and you are in a totally different world of horn sections and avant garde Jazz!!

Great band all round. Rain Dances and the Snow Goose got lots of play way back when. I still have the albums someplace, but alas, no turntable....

Mel Collins on reeds and flute didn't hurt either. |
