I've grown a new interest for Ron Blair lately. His lines aren't super complex, but they fit the songs perfectly.

I was just watching this clip(my favorite Tom Petty song) and I can't help but say the guy's underrated.

Yes!! I'm a big fan of Blair too, he plays rock-solid lines pretty much all the time. It also doesn't hurt that he works for (IMO) one of the greatest songwriters of all time.

Love Ron's playing especially on the new record. Howie Epstein is actually a bigger influence on my playing than Ron but he is quickly catching up!

Absolutely. I've been listening to a lot of the Tom Petty Anthology (and I know Howie played on many of the tracks), but the stuff that Ron Blair plays on really fits the song. He's always been capable of ripping off a great bass solo, but he really fits the songs. I don't Tom Petty would want a busy bass player. Great choice of notes. BTW, Mojo is a great example of good bass playing.

Always loved the old-school Petty that I grew up on, as well as the more recent stuff. The original Tench-Lynch-Campbell-Blair Heartbreakers lineup was a fabulous band.

I'm glad to see Ron back in the fold and those guys still put on a great show.

Ron Blair's great! I saw Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers in Philly recently, not knowing who Petty's bass player was, but after that show I'm a huge fan.
He's no Entwistle, but his bass lines couldn't be more perfect for Petty's music. Plus he's got great taste in basses (pre-CBS J's w/ matching headstocks)

His tone on American Girl is so perfect. Ron Blair's one of those guys who doesn't play a ton of notes, but he makes each one count.
