Any Randy Jo Hobbs fans?

I stumbled accross my old Johnny Winter cd, "Still Alive and Well". Great stuff.....really like RJH's sound on "Silver Train" and "Rock Me Baby". I know RJH played P basses, but anybody know what strings and amps he used in the studio?

Thanks, p5

Nice to see his name here, big influence on me as a kid. I used to see him a lot with both Johnny & Edgar's bands. I remember him having SVTs on stage.

I saw him a couple of times with Johnny...but don't remember his amp setup (it was the 70's...what can I say).

Loved him as a player though...I believe he passed away back in the early 90's...I will see Rick Derringer at the Dallas Guitar show in a couple of weeks and ask him about Randy....I will post anything he tells me...

That would be great, Rick should know the dealio, him and Randy were playing together since they were kids.

Thanks fishtx! I'd love to hear about his studio practices/ techniques! I have seen Randy a few times on t.v. Playing a P with rounds (Rotos?) and a pick;. Playing thru a Marshall stack. It was back in '73, I went to a friends house after school, his older bro' was spinning "Still Alive and Well" at full volume........sounds funny, but it was at that moment I knew I had to be a rock musician. Since then I have played in numerous blues, metal and top 40 bands, and am currently playing contemporary gospel and jazz. To this day, my Johnny Winter cd's are at the top of my collection....good stuff! btw, last night I was checking out JW on YOU TUBE, I found a japanese gentleman giving a lesson on how to play Rock Me Baby; you gotta check this out!

"Still Alive and Well" is a great record. as a kid in my high school garage band, we played several tunes off that record (All tore down, silver train, cheap tequila, etc...).

I saw him with Johnny Winter.
He uses a P-bass through a Ampeg SVT.
Don't know what string he used, maybe Roto's.

Good groove player.

Thank you for remembering Randy Jo.

Randy was an intense rock player. I was very impressed with his playing on Johnny Winter's albums, also on the White Trash live album that Edgar did.

I saw Randy Jo with Johnny Winter And at Knoxville Civic Center back in 1973. I was blown away. Still am.

RIP Randy Jo Hobbs.

It didn't sound like Randy on Free Ride to me, and Dan Hartman also wrote it.

My favorite track on EWG's "They only come out at Night" was "Undercover Man"...Edgar sings his A** off on that tune...

Put me down as well! I was a huge fan as a teen... he never got enough credit. I'm going to have to pick up those great Winter brothers albums.
