Anybody know who played bass for "Seals & Croft"

Sign in to disble this ad
I was listening to a "Seals & Croft" greatest hits the other day and noticed on their really great hits like "Diamond Girl" how the bass lines were so good that they were what I would consider "make or break" bass lines, meaning the song might not even *be* a hit without the great bass work.

Does anybody know who played on these tracks?

Louie Shelton played with them. Believe he was on the Summer Breeze album.

Are you sure about Louie Shelton? He is (was?) a guitarist; I can't remember seeing any credits where he played bass, though that doesn't necessarily prove anything.

I read a interview with Wilton Felder of BS&T recently and he said he played on Summer Breeze. I think Harvey Brooks recorded with them as well. I saw Seals & Crofts back in the day, and their road bassist was great too! I don't know who he was, but he grooved and was a very tasty player.

Louie Shelton is primarily a guitar player. However there are credits for him playing bass with S&C.

Wilton Felder played sax/bass with The Crusaders. Wasn't it Jim Fielder who played with BS&T?

Jim Fielder, huh. Wow. This guy is great. Sounds like he's a finger style bassist with a pretty strong jazz background. It really opened my eyes to the importance and significance of great bass work.

To me, this kind of bass work reminds me of a great NFL right guard...they are unknown but crucial to the success of the effort. I would bet the studio work he was doing was very elementary compared to his ability. It seems like most studio players are way above what they're asked to do in many cases. Thanks for the info - this guy is good.

I recall reading (very recently, too) that it was Harvey Brooks on "Summer Breeze".

Jim Fielder? I would say he has a strong background in R&B & Jazz...re-visit the first 4 BS&T records.
In fact, check out the transcription to "You've Made Me So Very Happy" in this month's Bass Player.
