Let me start this off by saying, YES....I work with Steve at Bass At The Beach. But this has nothing to do with that...this is PERSONAL!!!
Steve FINALLY released his solo cd....entiltled "So Low.....solo" Wow....its VERY cool stuff. Maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but amazing IMO. From the composition, to the exectution......Steve's music and playing are stunning. Its solo, no overdubs....with percusssion by Robert Thomas Jr. (Weather Report).
To me....Steve's solo voice is my FAVORITE. I don't try to play like him, or impersonate him....but listening, he blows me away. Check it out at CD Baby....the tracks have samples you can listen to (However, the songs really evolve, so listening to a sample snip doesn't give you much) http://cdbaby.com/cd/baileysteve

No looping or overdubs and no chops for chops sake is a refreshing departure from most solo electric bass offerings. I look forward to spending more time with this one, very inspirational playing . |

Now I know it's all with no overdubs, so I'll give a little latitude there.
Listening to the clip of "Last Train Home" right now, and well, he hits some clams.
Amazing that he can pull it off alone, flat out killer in that regard. But I'm sorry, he's out of tune at times. Enough to make you go "Ehhhh...just a little higher Steve....."
So, lemme have it, flame retardant briefs are on......... (And no, I didn't come in here to be a hater, honestly came to check it out as I may have picked up a copy myself).

"This project is, without a doubt, the most challenging endeavor of my career. Impossible for me to play perfectly, some of the songs are inhabited by the denizens of such a pursuit. More than a few of these interlopers were chased out of town by some serious wood-shedding. The ones that wouldn't leave...well, I have embraced them as family. In fact, these mistakes are now, in some measure, that which makes me very humbled by (and proud of) my efforts.
Steve, Oct. 2007"
I was present for some of the recording and mixing, and heard all of the 20 original cuts before it came down to 12 on the cd. Steve is incredible.....and his 'voice' is one of a kind. Each song evolves and must be listened to from beginnig to end....I consider it a must have for bass players. JMHO

This is the kind of stuff I would get all enthused about, when I was 20 years younger, and me and my bass were going to rule the world. "Music for Bass Players"
I listened to some of this stuff, it bores me, plus his intonation needs work....
